This winter pom pom wreath is super easy to make and even cuter once finished.
I’ve always been a big fan of wreaths. Most people wait until the Christmas holiday to bring them out, but I am a firm believer in using them all throughout the year.
Whether you’re wanting to add a simple seasonal touch or go all out for Halloween, Christmas, and Easter – wreaths are one way to do it. Not to mention, they don’t take up a lot of space and typically only use a few supplies.
WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT
For this particular wreath style, we are using a yarn material, which I also love working with. I recently made some yarn Christmas trees, tassel trees made of yarn, and yarn-wrapped pumpkins. So as you can see, I really like how yarn-style crafts turn out.
Yarn is also one of those fabrics (or materials) that go with just about any decor style, especially the farmhouse theme. Depending on the color of yarn you choose, you can really use a yarn craft to give your decor a visual boost.
SUPPLIES NEEDED

- Yarn (your choice of color and thickness)
- Fabric scissors

*The pom pom maker comes in a 2-pack with two sizes: 3 3/8″ and 2 1/2″.
TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE A WINTER POM POM WREATH
Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below:
- Start by wrapping the colored yarn that you want to use to make larger pom poms. I personally chose white for my large ones. I wrapped 90 times on each side. The amount of times you wrap will depend on the size of the yarn you use.
- Once both sides are wrapped with yarn, cut the yarn along the center gap of the arch.
- Then, use an additional piece of yarn to wrap through the middle and create a tie to hold your pom together.**
- Remove the pom pom from the maker and remove any loose pieces as well as trim any pieces that came out longer.
- Repeat steps 1-3 for all the yarn colors you want to use. (For the smaller pom poms, you’ll only need to wrap about 60 times on each side.)
- Once you have all of your pom poms created, begin tying them to the wire wreath form with a double knot. Begin with the large pom poms, and then fill in any gaps with the small pom poms.
- Turn the finished wreath over and fluff out the pom poms to create a well-rounded look.
- Add any embellishments of your choice or leave it as is. Add a big ribbon for hanging (or use a wreath hanger).
** TIP: The instructions on the pom pom maker will suggest using twine. I chose to use the yarn to secure my pom poms and attache them to the wreath. If I made this craft again, I would probably use a strong thread or twine instead.
***NOTE: As you’ll see in the instruction video, I used two colors to create a few pom poms. If you do this, wrap with BOTH color yarns together at the same time. This way, you’ll only need to wrap half the amount of times as you would if you were using one color.
OPTIONAL: Don’t be afraid to get as creative as you want! You can choose a variety of colors.
I really like how this wreath turned out! It’s cute and adds a gentle look to my ongoing winter-themed decor.
MORE YARN CRAFTS:
- The winter pom pom wreaths aren’t the only thing to make with your stash of yarn. Have a go at creating a few reverse canvas yarn tassel trees.
