DESIGN YOUR OWN FALL LEAF CANVAS ART WITH JUST A FEW SUPPLIES YOU ALREADY HAVE LAYING AROUND YOUR HOME.
When fall break comes around it can be hard to keep your kiddos occupied. Keep them busy by doing a little creative art.
That’s why I did a roundup of The Best Simple Kids Crafts and Boredom Busters. Any parent would agree that it would be nice to have things for their kids to do, especially to keep them from getting bored. Being completely honest here, bored kids are no fun.
WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT
I love this project because it doesn’t take much make – I only had to buy the canvas. I’m also able to get my kids involved from beginning to end. We took a nature walk to collect the leaves, which gets them outside, moving, and on the lookout for “special” leaves for their artwork.
They can do much of what’s needed, except the ironing (depending on the age and development level of your child, of course). It’s also something that will become a keepsake once finished!
SUPPLIES NEEDED
- 1 (14×18) Canvas – really, you can use any size you like
- Blue Chalk Paint – get creative and use any color!
- Paintbrush – I bought this bulk pack of 1-inch brushes, and I use them on SO many projects!
- Mod Podge – matte finish
- Parchment Paper, NOT wax paper!
- Iron
- Leaves from Outside
TUTORIAL: HOW TO MAKE FALL LEAF CANVAS ART
Follow this quick video, or read the step-by-step directions below:
- Paint 2 coats of paint onto the canvas. Be sure to let the first coat dry completely before applying the next.
- Apply a generous coat of Mod Podge to the canvas, and let it dry completely.
- Place your leaves onto the canvas in any shape or format you’d like. TIP: trim the stems down, since they do not adhere nicely to the canvas like the leaves will.
- Lay a piece of parchment paper of top of a leaf. Press an iron (with NO STEAM, set on medium-high heat) over the parchment paper to reactivate the Mod Podge, causing the leaf to stick to the canvas. Only press a leaf or two at a time.
- Apply another generous coat of Mod pPdge to secure the leaves completely on the canvas.
***NOTE: Use your leaves right away so they do not dry out. Dried leaves do not adhere well to the canvas with Mod Podge.
This is the perfect fall art project to do with your kids. Let them get as creative as they want!
