Active Time: 15 minutes
Additional Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Difficulty: easy

These candy cane stripe candles are the perfect budget-friendly Christmas craft! Get the look for less with just Dollar Tree supplies and a little paint.

Materials

  • 2 battery-operated candles (Dollar Tree or craft store)
  • Painter’s tape
  • Red acrylic or chalk paint (I used Waverly chalk paint in “Lacquer”)
  • Mod Podge (matte finish works great)
  • Red glitter
  • Manila folder or scrap paper (for catching glitter)

Tools

  • Small craft paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Optional: small container for extra glitter

Instructions

    1. Watch the video. Follow along with the video tutorial for a walkthrough on how to make your own candy cane stripe candles.
    2. Tape Off the Stripes. Grab your painter’s tape and begin making stripes around the candle. Lay down one strip of tape, then another directly next to it, edge-to-edge. Add a third strip right beside those, then remove the middle piece — this gives you evenly spaced candy cane stripes every time! Depending on the size of your candle, the spacing may not work out perfectly so you might need to cut the last piece of tape in half or adjust your spacing slightly.Tip: These candles can have a slightly waxy surface, so take a little extra time to smooth the tape down well to prevent paint from bleeding underneath.
    3. Add Red Paint. Once your tape is secure, use a small craft brush to apply red paint between the taped sections. Paint in smooth strokes—either straight up and down or from the tape inward toward the center of each stripe—to avoid bleeding. You only need one generous coat of paint. Let it dry completely before moving on.
    4. Add Mod Podge and Glitter. Working in sections, brush a generous coat of Mod Podge over each red stripe. Then sprinkle red glitter over the wet Mod Podge. Tap off the excess glitter onto your manila folder or scrap paper, then fold it to pour the extra glitter back into the container.
    5. Remove the Tape. Before the Mod Podge fully dries, carefully peel away the painter’s tape at a 45-degree angle. This helps keep the lines crisp and prevents the glue from pulling up dried glitter.
    6. Let Dry and Display. Allow your candles to dry completely. Then stand back and admire your sparkly candy cane stripe creations!
