Vinyl tile is a fantastic, budget-friendly way to quickly and easily change up the look of your floors. It’s a great option for people like me who love decorating, changing, and tweaking their decor. I’m a bit, should I say, commitment-shy when it comes to my home decor. By using vinyl floor tile, I can easily remove the flooring if I (or a future owner) decided they want a new look.
Related: Peel and Stick wallpaper is fairly easy to install, comes in a variety of patterns and colors, and is easy to remove when you move. Whether you are a renter looking for a damage-free decor option, or are a home owner not ready for a permanent commitment, get ready to transform your space with this temporary wallpaper shopping guide.
I recently installed this vinyl tile in our main level bathroom, and I’m in love. I loved this project (seriously so easy!) that I decided to buy this vinyl tile and install it in our kitchen!
Vinyl Tile vs. Tile Sticker Decals
When shopping for patterned vinyl tile, be sure to read product descriptions and reviews very carefully. Here are a couple of things to look out for:
Is it a tile or a sticker?
A vinyl tile is a bit thicker and needs to be cut with a razor blade. It’s a heavier-duty option great for high traffic areas – think kitchens, baths, entryways. A vinyl (tile) sticker is just that. It’s a sticker (albeit a heavy duty one) that looks like a tile. I have never personally used them, but the reviews are great. Knowing my family/kid/dog situation, I’m not sure I would use them anywhere other than a backsplash. If you don’t have young kids or are a renter, though, the sticker route may be your best bet.
Customer Reviews
I cannot emphasize this enough: read customer reviews. This is why I like shopping online so much, because people leave detailed reviews with pictures. This way you know exactly what you’re getting. Just like with my pillow covers and peel-and-stick wallpaper guides, for every 5-star product, there is also a 1-star. I do my best to link to only highly-reviewed products or products I or someone I know have personally used.
Measure, Measure, Measure
When installing, I follow the old adage, “measure twice, cut once”. But be sure to measure twice before you buy as well.
First, accurately measure your space to determine (1) how much tile you will need, allowing for waste, and (2) whether the size of your tile works with your space. This leads me to…
Second, be sure to read the product description and dimensions of the tile. Not all vinyl floor tile are the same. While the standard is 12 x12, they can range in size from 6 x 6 to 12 x 24. So, be sure you know what you are ordering and whether it will work with your floor area.
