Nothing says 4th of July like having a platter of patriotic fruit kabobs! This is perfect for the holidays and would also be a total hit at any other summer gathering. They’re super easy to make and an overall tasty summer treat.
Let’s make patriotic summer fruit skewers with strawberries, blueberries, and marshmallows.
The Perfect 4th of July Treat
I like this summer project for a few particular reasons. For starters, I always have an abundance of wooden skewers and marshmallows on hand in the summertime. If you’re like my family, you probably do A LOT of grilling. Not only that we make great use of our fire pit by roasting marshmallow treats.
I also like this project because when you hear (and feel) “summer,” it usually screams popsicles, ice cream, and lots of other sugar-pumped foods and snacks. Instead of going for the sugar-packed stuff, I can make these treats that are both sweet, yet contain fruit and not feel as guilty. Also, you can always add more fruit and less marshmallows, making them super versatile!

Patriotic Fruit Kabobs: Red, White, and Blue Skewers
This is another project that can be made with the entire family, especially the kiddos. They’ll enjoy loading the skewers and having a sprinkling good time.
Ingredients
If you make a lot of s’mores during the summer, then you may have enough marshmallows on hand. If not, grab a bag of those along with:
- strawberries
- blueberries
- red, white, and blue candy melts
- red, white, and blue sprinkles
- skewers
- pastry bags
You’ll also want to have a wire rack and baking sheet to place your patriotic fruit kabobs on for setting.
Directions – how to make Summer fruit skewers
This recipes will work best with fresh, ripe strawberries and blueberries. Since the 4th of July falls in the middle of Farmer’s Market and berry picking season, you should be able to easily find some.
First off, make sure your fruit has been thoroughly washed/rinsed. Lay it on a paper towel to air dry while you gather the other things you need. Next, hull the strawberries.
You could go with simply chopping off the top of the strawberry, but hulling them will will preserve more of the fruit. Once you’ve gotten the tops removed, begin feeding them onto the skewer from the bottom/small side going to the wider/top side. Make sure you slide it down enough to give room for the other ingredients.
Next, add a marshmallow and slide it all the way down. The jumbo marshmallows work best for this treat.
Finally, add 4 blueberries, making sure to slide them down until the top blueberry is covering the point of the skewer. At this point, your patriotic fruit kabobs will begin coming together.
Now it’s time to add the topping. Grab your candy melts and melt them according to the directions. Add the melted mixture to the pastry bag and tie it off at the top. Snip off a small bit of the end of the bag and you’re ready to start decorating!
Place the skewers onto a paper plate and decorate each ingredient with a varying color of candy melt. Add the sprinkles and then transfer the sweet treat to a wire rack with a baking sheet beneath. Place them in the freezer for 5 minutes to harden. Serve immediately.

Tips to Consider:
Candy melts hardening too fast? If you’ve ever worked with candy melts before, then you may have experienced it setting a little quicker than you’d like. If this happens to you while decorating your patriotic fruit kabobs, simply place the pastry bag on a plate and microwave it for about 10 seconds to re-melt.
Change up your fruit selection. These kabobs are just begging to be customized. Feel free to experiment with other fruits like bananas and apples. You can also play around with the order in which you load the kabobs. The main thing is to have fun and look forward to a sweet treat the entire family will enjoy!
