Grab some ornament door hangers from the Dollar Tree to make these oversized, large dollar store ornaments for your Christmas tree.
DIY Large Dollar Store Ornaments – 3 Different Craft Tutorials
Today I’m going to be working with these little ornament door hangers. Dollar Tree has lots of different styles of door hangers – different shapes and styles.
Basically, it’s just a heavy-duty cardboard decoration. I’ve bought a handful in an ornament shape. It comes with a nice little cute little metal topper as well.
PS – If you love these Christmas ornament door hanger transformations, don’t miss these fall pumpkin door hangers.
These ornament door hangers are really cute on their own. I’m just not a very “bright color holiday decorations” kind of person. I like my neutral colors and my farmhouse style.
So we’re going to just flip these over, and we’re going to decorate the back side of them instead. I’m going to do it three different ways, and then I’m going to stick these on my Christmas tree. Who doesn’t love a few oversized ornaments on a Christmas tree?
Video Tutorial – Dollar Store Jumbo Ornaments
Just watch this video below to see how I made all three of these Christmas crafts:
1 – Shiplap Dollar Store Ornament
Shiplap Dollar Store Ornament
A rustic, shiplap-style, large Christmas ornament hanger.
Materials
- dollar store ornament door hanger
- pen blade
- Waverly antique wax
- Waverly chalk paint - mineral, ivory, and ink
- paint brushes, 1-inch flat and fine point
- skinny black marker
- hot glue gun and hot glue
- 5 evergreen pipe cleaners
- 2 small metallic berry sprigs
- 1.5-inch ribbon
- 3/8-inch ribbon
- scissors
- 12 x 12 glitter scrapbook paper, 1 sheet
- Mod Podge
- twine - to hang the ornament, if desired
Instructions
- Using a pen blade or flat screwdriver, carefully pry the metal topper off the ornament door hanger.
- Flip the ornament over, so the unfinished side faces up. Use a flat paint 1-inch brush to apply Waverly antique wax (or brown paint) in a back-and-forth motion to lightly distress the surface. This will help the ornament hanger look more like wood and less like cardboard.
- Next, repeat this same process with Waverly chalk paint in mineral. Focus on filling in any unpainted spots.
- For the final coat, repeat this process with Waverly chalk paint in ivory. Use a dry brush technique to layer on the paint - always in a back-and-forth motion. Add as much or as little white paint as you want - depending on how whether you want the ornament to look.
- Let the paint dry completely. You can speed up this process with a blow dryer on the “cool” setting.
- Use a straight edge to draw horizontal “shiplap” lines on the ornament surface.
- Then paint over these drawn lines using a fine point paint brush and black paint. Now it looks like planked wood.
- Peel the old adhesive off the back of the metal ornament topper. Re-glue it to the back of the ornament using hot glue.
- OPTIONAL: Trace the ornament onto a sheet of scrapbook paper. Cut out the paper tracing, and apply to the front (which will now become the back) of the ornament with Mod Podge. This way the ornament hanger is finished on both sides.
- Twist 5 greenery pipe cleaners into a circle - or wreath - shape.
- Cut two small sprigs of berries and bend them to match the curve of the wreath. Then twist them into place at the bottom of the wreath.
- Cut two 4-inch lengths of both the wide and thin ribbon - be sure to cut at a 45-degree angle. Secure the 4 lengths of ribbon together in the center with a piece on thin ribbon and a square knot in the back. Fluff the ribbon bow into a nice shape.
- Hot glue the mini wreath to the ornament hanger.
- Then hot glue the ribbon bow onto the bottom of the wreath.
- Hang the ornament hanger with twine.
2 – Nautical Rope Dollar Store Ornament
Nautical Rope Dollar Store Ornament
Make this farmhouse-style oversized Christmas tree ornament - with supplies from the dollar store
Materials
- dollar store ornament door hanger
- printed "Merry & Bright" graphic
- pencil and pen
- Waverly chalk paint - moss and ink
- paint brushes - 1-inch and 1/2-inch flat
- nautical jute rope (from the dollar store)
- masking tape
- 1-inch wide holiday ribbon
- hot glue gun and hot glue
- 12 x 12 sheet of scrapbook paper
- Mod Podge
Instructions
- Using a pen blade or flat screwdriver, carefully pry the metal topper off the ornament door hanger.
- Use a large flat paint brush to cover the unfinished back and edges of the ornament hanger with moss green paint. One solid coat should give you full coverage.
- Take two packages of nautical jute rope, and cut each length of rope in half. Discard one of the four rope pieces. Tape the remaining three pieces of rope together. Then tape the end of the rope bundle to a desk or work table.
- Braid the rope in a simple braid. Measure the circumference of the ornament hanger - This is the length that the rope braid will need to be. Cut the ends of the rope pieces and tape them together.
- Print out the “Merry + Bright” graphic on regular printer paper.
- Using a pencil, scribble back and forth across the back of the paper, covering all the parts where the printer had printed ink.
- Center the graphic over the ornament hanger, and lightly tape into place. Use a pen to trace an outline of all the letters. This will transfer a light pencil outline onto the ornament hanger. Remove the paper.
- Use a small paint brush to fill in all of the pencil outlines with black paint.
- OPTIONAL ALTERNATIVE - you could cut this graphic with a Circuit or Silhouette - onto vinyl, glitter yardstick, etc.
- Once the paint had dried, trace the ornament onto a sheet of scrapbook paper. Cut out the paper tracing, and apply to the front (which will now become the back) of the ornament with Mod Podge. This way the ornament hanger is finished on both sides.
- Flip the ornament back over. Peel the old adhesive off the back of the metal ornament topper. Re-glue it to the back of the ornament using hot glue.
- Cover the tape on each rope end with ribbon and hot glue.
- Then hot glue the rope around the edge of the ornament hanger - with the two rope ends meeting at the top of the ornament.
- Cut a length of ribbon and tie into a bow. Hot glue the bow to the top of the ornament - where the two rope ends meet.
- Hang the ornament hanger with twine.

3 – Mini Ornament Tree Craft
Mini Ornament Tree Craft
Let's make a jumbo ornament - decorted with a mini ornament bulb tree - using dollar store supplies.
Materials
- dollar store ornament door hanger
- black chalkboard paint
- paint brushes - 1.5-inch and 1/2-inch wide
- 10 mini plastic ornaments
- Waverly chalk paint - mineral
- 1.5-inch wide ribbon
- 3/8-inch wide ribbon
- scissors
- hot glue gun and hot glue
- DecoArt Extreme Sheen Paint - champagne gold
- 12 x 12 sheet of scrapbook paper
- Mod Podge
Instructions
- Using a pen blade or flat screwdriver, carefully pry the metal topper off the ornament door hanger.
- Use a large flat paint brush to cover the unfinished back and edges of the ornament hanger with black chalkboard paint. One solid coat should give you full coverage.
- Paint the metal ornament topper gold.
- Trace the ornament onto a sheet of scrapbook paper. Cut out the paper tracing, and apply to the front (which will now become the back) of the ornament with Mod Podge. This way the ornament hanger is finished on both sides.
- Next, paint the gold ornaments. Hold the mini ornament by the topper. Using a dry brush technique, lightly apply a bit of gray paint to the ornament - just enough to age them and take a bit of the shine off.
- Hot glue the mini ornament onto the chalkboard paint surface. Glue four mini ornaments in the bottom row, three in the next, two above that, and one at the top - this makes a triangle, or a Christmas tree, shape.
- Cut two 4-inch lengths of both the wide and thin ribbon - be sure to cut at a 45-degree angle. Secure the 4 lengths of ribbon together in the center with a piece on thin ribbon and a square knot in the back. Fluff the ribbon bow into a nice shape.
- Hot glue the bow to the top of the mini ornament tree.
- Cut another 4-inch length of wide ribbon. Fold the ribbon in half, and hot glue it into place at the bottom of the mini ornament tree.
- Hang the ornament hanger with twine.
I really like this whole jumbo size ornaments look. Even though I don’t have a huge tree, I’m really kind of digging this vibe of super large ornaments this year.
But there you have it: three different dollar store ornament door hanger crafts. You could add these to wreaths. You could hang them on shelves – not just in your Christmas tree. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Until next time, happy making.
