Follow this simple tutorial to make DIY industrial pipe curtain rods that easily be customized to fit any size of window in your home.
Metal pipe curtains rods – made from plumbing hardware. Perfect for that “modern farmhouse” or industrial look!
I’ve actually made these DIY curtain rods twice now: First, in my bedroom in our last home. Then again just a few weeks ago in our new house. I love these curtain rods so much, and they add so much character to a room. They’re the perfect neutral accessory to any window.
DIY Industrial Pipe Curtain Rods
1 – For a Smaller, Standard Window
I made these curtain rods for my bedroom in our last home:

Supplies needed for ONE window:
- 2 – 3/4″ x 3″ nipple
- 2 – 3/4″ floor flange
- 2 – 3/4″ tee
- 2 – 1/2″ cap
- 8 – 2″ flat head screws
- spray paint – I prefer this “hammered” effect type
- 1 – length of 1/2 black steel pipe
One “bracket” for each corner of the window consists of: a floor flange, a nipple, and a tee assembled together. Watch this video below (or read this tutorial) to see how I hang perfectly level and even curtain hardware each time:
2 – For an Extra Long Picture or Bay Window
The longer window is a tad more complicated, since you need to add a piece of mounting hardware in the middle. I opted to use two smaller 1/2-inch pipes (cut the same length) since one long pipe would NOT fit into my SUV.
Supplies needed for ONE extra-wide window:
- 2 – 3/4″ x 3″ nipple
- 1 – 1/2″ x 3″ nipple
- 2 – 3/4″ floor flange
- 1 – 1/2″ floor flange
- 2 – 3/4″ tee
- 1 – 1/2″ tee
- 2 – 1/2″ cap
- 12 – 2″ flat head screws
- spray paint – I prefer this “hammered” effect type
- 2 – length of 1/2 black steel pipe
Tutorial – How to assemble and mount DIY Industrial Pipe Curtain Rods
- Spray paint all of the plumbing pieces. Make sure to get all of the angles and nooks. Spray paint the tops of the screws as well. Let dry.
- Attach together: a floor flange, nipple, and tee. This makes a single mounting bracket. Use the two 3/4″ mounting brackets on the ends, and the 1/2″ mounting bracket in the middle.
- Mount the three brackets over the window.
- Now, add the pipes. Slide a pipe through on of the end 3/4″ brackets and into the middle 1/2″ bracket, turning it to screw into place. Repeat on the other side.
- Finish the ends of the curtain rods with a 1/2″ cap.
- Hang your curtain of choice – I used sheer white Ikea curtains and these drapery hooks.
But can you believe the difference in my living room with my new bright white sheer curtain panels and black industrial curtain rods?
Here we are before – If you look closely, the large section of blinds in the bay window is TIED up to keep the whole thing from coming crashing down:
And here’s the after:
Stay tuned for my DIY board and batten tutorial (you got a little sneak peek in the picture above), since that project should be finished in the next couple of weeks!
Hi! This is so great! I love your ideas! I was wondering if the drapery hooks take the paint off when you slide them back and forth?
