Create a cozy winter window decor using Dollar Tree supplies! This DIY mini wood crate window craft is budget-friendly, easy, and perfect for winter decorating.

Materials

  • 4x6 stretched canvas (Dollar Tree)
  • Mini wood crate (Dollar Tree)
  • Regular popsicle sticks
  • Jumbo popsicle stick
  • Thin ribbon (¼" wide)
  • Faux winter greenery / berry sprigs
  • Battery-operated pillar candle
  • Small piece of Dollar Tree cutting mat
  • Thin neutral canvas ribbon, twine, or braided twine
  • Wood stain (I used Waverly Antique Wax)

Tools

  • Razor blade or craft knife
  • Miter shears
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Small paint brush
  • Paper towel
  • Scissors
  • Sharpie marker

Instructions

    1. Watch the video. Follow along with the video tutorial for a step-by-step walkthrough of how to make your own winter window mini crate.
    2. Create the Window Frame. Carefully score around the back of the stretched canvas using a razor blade. Remove and discard the canvas fabric, leaving only the wooden frame. (Save the fabric for another project!). remove stretched canvas from wood frame
    3. Add Window Panes. Using miter shears, cut popsicle sticks to form a vertical and horizontal cross inside the frame. Hot glue them neatly to the front of the frame so the front looks clean and finished. Add extra glue on the back for stability.
    4. Attach Frame to Crate. Hot glue the wooden frame to the back top edge of the mini wood crate. Cut a jumbo popsicle stick to the width of the frame and glue it along the seam between the crate and the window to help it stand upright.
    5. Stain Everything. Using a small paint brush, apply Waverly Antique Wax to the entire piece — get into all the nooks and crannies. Wipe away excess stain with a paper towel. trim cutting mat piece
    6. Add the “Glass”. Trace the back of the window frame onto a small piece of Dollar Tree cutting mat. Cut to size and hot glue it in place. Cover the rough seam with thin canvas ribbon, twine, or braided twine for a polished look. hot glue cutting mat piece to back of window frame
    7. Decorate the Crate. Wrap thin ribbon around the center of the crate and tie a simple bow using the bunny ears method. Hot glue it centered on the front. embellish mini wood crate with ribbon and bow
    8. Create the Floral Arrangement. Trim faux winter greenery and berry sprigs and arrange them inside the crate. No foam needed, just tuck them snugly into place.
    9. Add the Glow. Place a battery-operated candle behind the window so it softly glows through the “glass.”
