This easy Coastal Frame Sand Anchor Craft combines a faux shiplap background with a textured sand-covered anchor for a charming piece of beach-inspired wall art that looks right at home in a bathroom, entryway, lake cabin, or coastal-themed room.
You only need a handful of basic craft supplies that are easy to find at most craft stores—or you may already have them in your craft stash. With jumbo craft sticks, paint, cardstock, glue, and craft sand, you can create a custom piece of nautical decor in an afternoon. Even better, this design is easy to personalize by swapping the anchor for a starfish, seashell, or another favorite coastal shape.

Coastal Frame Sand Anchor Craft
This Coastal Frame Sand Anchor Craft transforms an inexpensive Dollar Tree frame into beautiful nautical wall art with a faux shiplap background and a textured sand-covered anchor. Perfect for coastal decorating on a budget.
Materials
- Dollar Tree 5x7 bobbin-edge picture frame (or any other picture frame will do)
- 5 jumbo craft sticks / jumbo popsicle sticks
- Teal craft paint
- Printed anchor template on cardstock
- Elmer’s school glue
- Craft sand
Tools
- 1-inch flat paintbrush
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Miter shears or scissors
- Parchment paper
Instructions

- Remove the frame backer. Start by taking the back out of your Dollar Tree picture frame. Set the frame aside for now. Discard the glass panel.
- Cut the jumbo craft sticks to size. To create the shiplap-style background, grab five jumbo popsicle sticks and trim them to match the height of the frame backer. I used my miter shears to cut the rounded ends off each craft stick first, then trimmed them all down so they were the same length. Once they were cut, I lined them up side by side.
- Glue the craft sticks to the backer. Once all five craft sticks are cut and lined up, hot glue them directly onto the cardboard picture frame backer.
- Paint the faux shiplap background. Paint the front of the craft stick background with teal craft paint. Paint the entire front surface and let it dry completely.
- Cut out an anchor template. While the paint dries, make your anchor embellishment. I printed a simple anchor shape onto cream-colored cardstock and carefully cut it out with craft scissors. You could also use: a Cricut-cut anchor or a wooden anchor cutout from the craft store.
- Cover the anchor with glue. Place the cardstock anchor on parchment paper to protect your work surface. Squeeze Elmer’s school glue over the entire front of the anchor, then use a paintbrush to spread the glue into an even layer. Make sure the whole surface is covered.
- Add sand. Transfer the anchor to a clean piece of parchment paper, then sprinkle craft sand all over the top until it’s fully coated. Set it aside to dry for an hour or two.
- Assemble the frame. Once the painted craft stick insert is dry, place it back into the picture frame. Then pick up your sandy anchor and shake off any loose excess sand. Center it on the faux shiplap background and hot glue it into place.
