I am totally bananas for rental-friendly wall decor – decals and removable wallpaper especially. My latest rental-friendly creation is… cloud wall decals!
I made these cloud wall decals with the same technique as I used for the triangle wall decals that I did in the twins’ bedroom a few months back.
Let’s back up a bit and see how we got here. Last year, I emptied out this odd-shaped hall storage closet (it’s above the basement stairs) and converted it into a play room of sorts for the twins:
The closet was complete with a gallery wall filled with free printables in kid-friendly frames:
Things were great until one of my children (who shall remain unnamed) took all of the frames off the wall, took out the prints, and stowed them away in a toy box. The printables ended up crumpled and many of the plexiglass sheets were broken.
**This is why we can’t have nice things**
So we sat there with a blank wall while mommy decided what was next.

Select Your Vinyl
The best part of making your own wall decals is choosing among the variety of vinyl colors. There are so many options:
Pick a Shape
I know that this vinyl is made specifically for craft cutters – like a Cricut or Silhouette – but you don’t need to own one of these gadgets in order to do this project. I didn’t use one. I relied on good old fashioned scissors!
I did a Google image search for “cloud silhouette” and printed the image. I cut it out, and then traced it onto my vinyl. Too easy!
Since this was a smaller wall, I was able to sit on the couch one evening and cut these out over the course of my Sunday night prime-time lineup.
I opted to do an ombre pattern like I did with our triangle decal wall. I did a simple grid – no measuring. I just eyeballed it.
Hint: You need to have a clean wall. This will make it easier to re-position the decals if they aren’t lined up perfectly.
Our New Cloud Wall
The kids really seem to like the new wall decor. Now, place your bets on how long it takes them to start re-arranging the clouds…
