Come tour my closet desk, craft room, and home office all in one. How to organize a small space and create a functional work space for any home.
I run my blog from my home “office”. I use this term loosely because we don’t have a spare bedroom to use for a home office. Instead, I have a “cloffice”. It’s a office in a closet, where I have carved out valuable work space (you can take a tour here). It’s proof that no matter how small your home or apartment, you always get creative with your space and organizing solutions.
This space has served me well for a few years now, but it has been in need of a refresh. Craft supplies and paperwork have started to pile up, and I needed to re-evaluate my storage solutions. It was seriously a mess after the holiday season, so please don’t judge my “before” shot too harshly:
I love my home office space, but I wanted to make the following updates to make more functional organizing and update the decor of the space:
- Better utilize hanging and wall space for organizing office and craft supplies.
- Add rolling storage, so I can take my most-used supplies with me when I work at the kitchen table.
- Add natural wood decor to soften up the space a bit – everything seemed so black, white, gray, and blue.
- Re-organize my new crafting machine and it’s supplies (Cricut) which I didn’t own 3 years ago when I designed the space.
My Closet Desk and Home Office Update
I recently browsed home organization supplies and ideas at my local Cost Plus World Market store in Bloomington, MN.
After a fair amount of re-organizing and tinkering, I’m really happy with the outcome. I’m especially happy with that back wall.
Small Space Storage
See, my old white shelves on that back wall were really narrow, so I couldn’t put much on them. They were cute, but a total waste of valuable wall space, which is a total no-no in small spaces. Now with my new crate shelves and accordion hooks, I can have more of my essential supplies taking up that prime real estate at my desk.
Plus, I took advantage of hanging kitchen baskets to store some of my crafting essentials.
Rolling Storage Carts
Aside from updating the back wall, I also wanted to add rolling storage. I used to have a plastic drawer set, but it was clunky, awkward, and NOT portable. Since I often set up craft projects at our kitchen table, I need more portable craft options. Enter: my new metal rolling cart.
It holds some of my most-used craft supplies, like paper trimmers, glue, and markers. I also snagged this adorable housekeeping utility bucket to hold my craft vinyl.
